Hi, 4th Graders,

Since we have finished reading Beowulf but are still working on our presentation, there won't be any reading homework until Thursday of this week. At that time, I will be giving you some chapters from a biography of St. Benedict to read and report on, as well as some of his prayers and writings. Those won't be due until the week after this.

You won't have a spelling or vocabulary test this Friday either. So enjoy your week "off," and remember that you still need to be reading every night for at least 30 minutes and writing your time down on your blog for your parents to sign. Your logs are due this Friday.

Our presentation of Beowulf will take place this Thursday (change in date), October 28, at about 11:45. We will be asking Miss Brindley's third graders to come, and your parents are also invited! See you on Monday!

HISTORY: Charles Martel, Pepin the Short and Charlemagne

This past friday we started our introduction to Charlemagne or Charles the Great as some call him!
On Monday we will pick up where we left off with the reading packet...
  • Project: Reading and Discussion.
  •  "The Christmas Crowning of Charlemagne"
From this reading we will then discuss and answer the questions found on the last page of the packet.

Tuesday, we will be reading aloud the play "Song of Roland" which is a poem written around 1100 A.D.  by an unknown French author. This story is about the greatest of the legendary knights to serve Charlemagne, and is the oldest existing epic poem in French. This poem probably began as a popular song about a battle fought in 778 A.D when Charlemagne was returning from an expedition to Spain. Much of the poem/song's story has been changed to make the event more exciting to the listener. We'll discuss some of the changes we find.
  • What is your opinion on Blancandrin's statement that it is "Better for them to lose their heads than for us to lose our fair land of Spain?"
  • If you were King Charles, when King Marsile made his proposal, would you have chosen war or peace?
  • Do you think Roland was being foolish or brave when he refused to call for help? What would you have done if you were in Roland's shoes?

Homework for tuesday night, is to take your play and complete "The Three Estates" worksheet. Take all the characters listed in the play and place them in 3 categories: Churchmen and women, Nobles, Ordinary People.

Wednesday, we will have a map showing the expansion of Charlemagne's empire. After locating the territories taken from the Lombards and Saxons. We will look at a modern day map of Europe and try to determine which countries these territories are today. You will have a reading packet to read:
  • Chapter X: Charlemagne, King from 768-814 A.D.

Thursday, we will move on to Alfred the Great, after reading from our reading cards, we will complete the worksheet that goes along with it.

Friday, we will have a reading packet about Alfred the Great: Project, Reading and Discussion.
We will discuss in class the difference between the legend and the truth. Page 4 of this packet we will draw a picture of FIVE important events or contributions Alfred the Great made to society.

In history class today we discussed the importance of the phrase "Above the Salt" and tried to familiarize students with a social aspect of the Middle Ages, with great feast being the focus of this lesson.

We also read the book "A Medieval Feast" by Aliki, a wonderful tale about a king coming to visit a manor and all the preparations that take place in order to offer him a wonderful feast.

Our homework this evening, is to write a few paragraphs comparing a medieval feast to a modern day feast; Thanksgiving or Christmas.
What kind of courses were served, do we decorate our food still?
Do we still provide entertainment before a big meal?
Discuss some of the similarities and differences between these two meals.

LITERATURE: HOMEWORK 10/19-10/22

I am so proud of you, 4th Grade Class! You have read Beowulf and know more about the story and the time in which it was written than most high school seniors do! The question was raised on Friday, "Why are we reading something that is so old?" And others answered: "It's an important piece of literature!"

That it is--it's important for many reasons. It is the first piece of literature said to have been written in ENGLISH--and we know that English to be very different from modern English! It also carried on that genre that the Greeks created--the epic poem. It is from epic stories such as Beowulf that Marvel Comics got the idea for Superman, and George Lucas got the idea for Star Wars, and J.R.R. Tolkien got the idea for Bilbo and Frodo Baggins and that ring!

We will finish Beowulf this week and have our test over it next week, just as the 9 weeks is coming to a close. We will perform our story-telling with our "tapestry" for Miss Brindley's 3rd grade class on Tuesday, October 26 during our literature time, at about 11:45. Parents, you are invited to come!

Remember to read every day for 30 minutes--this week, you can count Beowulf. Fill out your Reading Logs, and study your Spelling List!
