LITERATURE: February 28-March 4

Hello, Students,

I am really enjoying reading Adam of the Road and hope you are, too! If you can tell me tomorrow what king and what charter the old man at the Inn told Adam a story about, I'll give you 5 points extra credit on your spelling test this week!

The picture above is what St. Giles's Fair in Oxford looks like these days

Your homework assignments for the next week are below. Be sure that you are doing all of your reading carefully. This week, you will also need to choose your favorite scene setting for your set design, and your favorite character for your costume design so that you can begin working on those in class on Wednesday. You should also choose the scene that you will be writing for your script--this needs to be at least one and 1/2 pages of dialogue or one page of monologue. You will probably have to work on this script at home, but bring it on a flash drive and you can also work on it in class or in the computer lab when time allows.

The 9 weeks is almost over, so please bring in those reading logs. You can count your reading at school for your 30 minutes each day--just write it down!

Your spelling list and homework is below:

For MONDAY: You should be reading Chapters 7-9 of Adam of the Road, and filling out your "Following the Story" chart.

For TUESDAY: Read Chapters 10 (Here Nick) and 11(Adam Swims the Wey) for discussion. Fill out your “Following the Story” charts as you read.

For WEDNESDAY: Read Chapters 12 (The Ferryman’s House) and 13 (Arrows in the King’s Forest) for discussion. Fill out your “Following the Story” charts as you read.

For THURSDAY: Read Chapters 14 (Adam to the Rescue) and Chapter 15 (St. Gile’s Fair) for discussion. Fill out your “Following the Story” charts as you read.

For FRIDAY: Read Chapters 16 (The Fall of Adam) and Chapter 17 (Adam Meets Some Minstrels) for discussion. Fill out your “Following the Story” charts as you read.

For MONDAY, March 7: Read Chapters 18 (Hue and Cry), Chapter 19 (News of Roger) and Chapter 20 (What Have You Done With Him?) Fill out your “Following the Story” charts as you read.

BIBLE: Esther Becomes Queen

February 28th - March 4th

Monday: We started our lesson on Esther last week, we will pick up where we left off and read Esther 1 & 2 from our Bibles. After reading, you will find out the servant who especially helped Esther and list two ways  in which he gave Esther special treatment.

Tuesday: We know from our reading cards, that Esther and the other virgins had to go through one year of beautification before they could be presented to the King. We will read 1 Peter 3:1-6 and see what the bible had to say about "beauty". You will then create your own beauty product. Your product must not only improve physical beauty, but it must improve something about their character as well.

Wednesday: We will finish any work on our beauty products.

Friday: Esther Becomes Queen Test

Thursday and Friday we will be watching our Veggie Tales movie about the story of Esther.

Happy President's Day (almost)!

On Monday, your parent(s) and I will be having a nice chat about YOU, and your work. You can sleep in and be lazy all day if you want to!

Since this is a short week, you will not have any spelling words and there will be no test on Friday.

We are starting a new novel, though, and I'm excited about it--it's one of my favorite books of historical fiction about the Middle Ages. And it takes place in one of my favorite countries of the word--England! (Part of it is even in Oxford, Olivia--where you'll go to school some day!)

I'll be giving you your copy of the book on Tuesday during class, and your reading assignments will begin right away. I want you to slow down as you read, though, and read for COMPREHENSION. You should be able to remember details about the setting, the plot, and the characters, and to make this easier, you will be asked to fill out a short chart each time you read a chapter. Your reading assignments are below:

History and Bible: TESTS

I hope you all enjoyed your snow day! Wasn't that great? Its too bad it melted the next day.

Just a reminder, the tests you were supposed to take this past Friday, you will have this coming Monday.

Be prepared for Marco Polo and Daniel in the Lions Den.

Make sure to study the Daniel Timeline, you've got to fill those in, so prepare by doing the brain training Mrs. Ratcliff and I mentioned to you. 10 minutes every two hours and you will cement information into your 4th grader brains!  -Ms. B

LITERATURE: Week of February 7-11

This is a picture of Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, England, where King Arthur was supposed to have built Camelot! Wanna go on a field trip?

Hi! Did you enjoy your long weekend? I hope you had fun in the snow! Today, you're probably in your shorts outside--by Wednesday, we may have snow again. Texas is crazy in February!

This week in literature, we will be finishing our fairy tale unit, and discussing and reading a little more in King Arthur. Reading this book has reminded me how much I love these. . . legends? myths? fairy tales? epic stories? In which genre does this book belong? We'll be discussing that, too! On Tuesday, you will have a very short basic information quiz over the first 4 chapters of King Arthur.

We will make up last week's spelling test tomorrow, Monday, February 7. Last week's reading logs are also due tomorrow. We will have another spelling test this Friday, but it will be spelling only and have fewer words on it. See details below.

Your reading assignment for the week will be to choose (in class) the one legend or story from the remainder of the King Arthur that you would like to read. You will write a summary of it, and share it with the class on Thursday this week. So, you will have Monday through Wednesday during class and in the evenings to work on this.
